What is the Volkswagen EC Certificate of Conformity?

The EC Certificate of Conformity for VW is the technical birth certificate of your vehicle and the official proof that your Volkswagen has valid type approval within the EU. In everyday language, it is usually called COC documents or VW COC. With this document, the manufacturer confirms that your car complies with all EU requirements for safety and the environment. This is exactly the document you need to register an imported Volkswagen with the national vehicle registration authority, without having to go through an expensive individual approval procedure.

With the Volkswagen COC documents that you order online through us, the registration authority and technical inspection organisations recognise the manufacturer’s data without difficulty; an additional technical report for an EU import is not required. The certificate is also the binding basis for vehicle tax and lists all wheel and tyre combinations approved ex works, whether for a Golf, Tiguan, Passat or a fully electric model such as the ID.3 or ID.4.

Required documents

• Only the Vehicle Identification Number - VIN

What technical data is included in the Volkswagen COC?

The Volkswagen COC document, the data sheet containing all vehicle data, provides a complete summary of the homologated characteristics that go beyond the standard vehicle registration document:

  • Identification: Vehicle Identification Number (VIN), make, exact type designation, variant and version, as well as the EC type-approval number that is decisive for import procedures.
  • Engine: Engine capacity, engine code, fuel type (petrol, diesel/TDI, natural gas or fully electric) and maximum net power in kW.
  • Dimensions and weights: Length, width and height, mass in running order, technically permissible maximum mass, as well as towing capacities (braked and unbraked) and vertical load, especially relevant for Transporter models or vehicles with a towbar.
  • Emissions: CO2 values according to WLTP (or NEDC for older vehicles) and the exact emissions standard, for example Euro 6 or Euro 6d for newer models, which directly affects the amount of vehicle tax.
  • Tyres: All tyre sizes and rim specifications approved ex works, so that you can fit winter wheels or accessory rims without additional registration.
  • Additional data: Official colour designation, number of seats, stationary and driving noise in dB(A), and the design-related maximum speed.

Where can you find the VIN on your Volkswagen?

To request your Volkswagen COC, you must provide the 17-character vehicle identification number (VIN). You can find it in the following locations:

  • Vehicle registration document: in field “E” of the registration certificate (Part I).
  • On the vehicle: visible through the windscreen on the driver’s side (lower section) or on the manufacturer’s identification plate located on the B-pillar.

Important note: please enter the VIN without spaces when placing your order. Make sure not to confuse the letter “O” with the number “0”, as this could cause processing delays.

Frequently Asked Questions About COC VW

Do You Also Provide COC Documents for Older and Classic Volkswagen Vehicles?

For practically every Volkswagen with EU type approval, we can provide the EC Certificate of Conformity, from the current Golf or Tiguan to older series such as Golf 4, Passat or Transporter T4. The situation is different for genuine classic cars: an air-cooled Beetle or a Bulli T1, T2 or T3 was built before the introduction of EU-wide type approval and therefore usually has no COC at all. For such vehicles, the process does not go through the Certificate of Conformity, but through an individual approval procedure with a recognised technical inspection body. Whether a COC exists for your Volkswagen can be checked immediately after entering the VIN.

Can I Also Get a COC for a VW Transporter, Caddy, Crafter or California?

Yes. Volkswagen commercial vehicles are EU type-approved and have an EC Certificate of Conformity; the order process is the same as for passenger cars, only the registered vehicle category differs. Transporter and Caddy panel vans usually fall under commercial vehicles of category N1, while a Crafter may be category N2 depending on the version if it exceeds 3.5 t permissible maximum mass; passenger versions such as Caravelle, Multivan or Caddy Life are passenger cars (M1). For registration as a commercial vehicle or as a motorhome, for example the California, the permissible maximum mass and towing capacities listed in the COC are decisive.

My VW Is a TDI That Received a Software Update: Do I Need a New COC?

No. The EC Certificate of Conformity is issued once at the time of manufacture and documents the type approval valid at that time, including its type-approval number. A later software update or manufacturer recall does not result in a new COC being issued; therefore, you do not need to order a new document because of an update.

I Have Lost the COC Documents for My Volkswagen: Can I Get a Duplicate?

Yes, and you do not need the lost original for this. For a duplicate Volkswagen EC Certificate of Conformity, the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is essentially sufficient; the requirement is an existing EU type approval, which we check in advance. You first receive the PDF copy and then the official original by post to your address, allowing you to complete the registration of your Volkswagen without waiting for an appointment at the dealer.
